MARVELETTE Star HORTON Dies!

The Marvelettes singer Gladys Horton has died. She was 66.

The Motown star – pictured left – passed away last night (26th January 2011) at a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, where she had been recovering from a stroke.

Horton formed the all-girl group as a teenager when she entered a school talent competition and went on to audition for Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson.

They then rose to fame with their 1961 hit Please Mr. Postman and later recorded tracks by accomplished writers including Brian Holland and Marvin Gaye.
Having met the man of her dreams, Horton left The Marvelettes in 1967 to get married. But she never left music completely, as she occasionally performed as Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes, and eventually semi-retired from showbusiness to care for her handicapped son.

R.I.P. Gladys!
