New BOURNE Movie Without MATT DAMON?

By on 11 October, 2010

For those who were looking forward to a fourth Bourne movie, I’m sorry to say that it now appears that (despite various hopes) Matt Damon won’t be returning to the action role.

Writer (and director on ‘The Bourne Legacy‘) Tony Gilroy has confirmed that the new movie won’t be a prequel or a re-boot, but rather a sort of spin-off from the original story.

Gilroy explains why his new story will be branching off the previous movies:

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal.

“Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy. Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas.”

Is this the right way of keeping fans from the previous Bourne movies? Can’t help thinking that ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’, but I might be totally pessimistic here.
