Henry Cavill – The New SUPERMAN!

The question over who will succeed Brandon Routh as the next Superman is over – according to Deadline.com! The next person to wear the iconic suit will be….British actor Henry Cavill.

Best known for his portrayal of Charles Brandon on Showtime’s ‘The Tudors‘, Cavill can be seen playing another hero in the upcoming ‘Immortals‘ this autumn, where he stars as Theseus, and battles mythological gods including Poseidon, Zeus, Minotaur, and Herecles (or Hercules).

It’s clear the studio opted for a more macho actor this time, moreso than his predecessors Routh and Christopher Reeve, as a Warner Bros. exec tells Deadline:

“He’s got an amazing quality. He doesn’t look too much like Reeve and Routh but he’s big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him.

“We’re really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible.”

The one-time James Bond / Batman contender also was seen as the favourite for the Man on Steel back when ‘Superman Returns‘ was first planned. But that was before Bryan Singer took the reigns from Brett Ratner and McG, and opted for Routh. The rest, as they say, is history.

The new movie, titled ‘Superman: Man of Steel‘, will be produced by Christopher Nolan and helmed by Zack Snyder, and it appears the director is more than happy with male lead.

Snyder says:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Other producers include Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. David S. Goyer is still busy writing the screenplay based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producing the project.

No specific release date has been set for the new Supes, but it will be sometime in December 2012.

So the more important question is, who will they pick for Lois Lane? I know Anne Hathaway‘s name has been thrown about a bit, but now that Warner Bros. have their Catwoman, do they really want her as Clark Kent‘s / Superman‘s love interest?

Here are some of my suggestions:

Evangeline Lilly

Kate Beckinsale

Michelle Monaghan

Olivia Wilde
