MADONNA’S ‘W.E.’ Movie Gets A Thumbs Down From Critics!

Superstar Madonna‘s latest movie directorial effort ‘W.E.‘ has reportedly bombed with critics, who have branded the movie “extraordinarily silly” and “insubstantial”. Not the kind of reviews you want pinned to the movie’s poster campaigns!

 

The Vogue hitmaker decided to step behind the camera for the royal drama, which tells the story of the scandalous relationship between Britain’s King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson – starring James D’Arcy, Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough. The monarch abdicated from his royal position in 1936 after their love affair became public.

‘W.E.‘ was unveiled at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday (1st September, 2011), and the first reviews of the film were worse than expected.
 

A writer for U.K.’s The Independent stated:

“The film is no masterpiece”, while a review in U.K. newspaper The Times states, “Whole scenes could easily be pop videos or perfume adverts. W.E. is about shiny surfaces.”
 

The movie receives a single star rating from U.K.’s The Guardian, with critic Xan Brooks writing:

“What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is… Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all. W.E. gives us slo-mo and jump cuts and a crawling crane shot up a tree in Balmoral, but they are all just tricks without a purpose.”
 

Grazia‘s review was also less than complementary, as Emma Pritchard Jones adds:

“Ultimately, it’s as insubstantial as the midnight blue chiffon dress Wallis wears to dine with the King.”
 

Amazingly the Daily Telegraph posted a much more positive review, saying it was “better than expected” and “not without amusing moments”.

And there was me looking forward to watching this! Still, it’s a good thing that I don’t always read what other reviewers say.
