NME Awards 2014 - Nominations Announced - Music News

The nominees for the prestigious NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas, have been announced, and the Arctic Monkeys lead with an outstanding eight nominations!

The rock ‘n’ roll prize-giving ceremony, which will take place on Wednesday 26th February at London’s O2 Academy, Brixton, will honour some of the best music talent around today – as voted by music fans across 20 categories.

Arctic Monkeys have received nods in the Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album, Best Track, Best Music Video, Music Moment Of The Year, Hero Of The Year for Alex Turner and Best Fan Community categories. Haim follows closely with six nominations, including Best International Band, Best Live Band, Best Music Video, Best Band Blog or Twitter – Alana, Best Fan Community, and Hero Of The Year – Este. Queens of The Stone Age, Lily Allen and Arcade Fire all have three noms each.

In true tradition, some of the best and worst in the world are also being recognised, with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles, Robin Thicke and David Cameron fighting it out for the undesirable Villain Of The Year award alongside Vladimir Putin and Russell Brand. Pussy Riot, Lou Reed, Alex Turner, David Bowie, and Este Haim are all up for Hero Of The Year, with Russell Brand splitting opinion by featuring in both the Hero Of The Year and Villain Of The Year categories.

Speaking about the nominations, NME editor Mike Williams said:

“The past 12 months of music have had everything – returning legends, era-defining singles, more albums with a claim to be modern classics than any year in recent memory and tons of massive live moments to celebrate. None of this has gone unnoticed by NME’s huge audience, with more people than ever voting to compile these incredibly exciting shortlists.

“I can’t wait for the ceremony at the O2 Academy Brixton on February 26th to find out who the big winners will be.”
