Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO drama ‘The Newsroom‘ appears to be making headlines following its debut on US TV, with some critics failing to take to the new series wholeheartedly!

Starring Jeff Daniels as news anchor Will McAvoy and British actress Emily Mortimer as Mackenzie McHale, the New York Post labelled the series as an “earnest, if idealised, look at a nightly news show”.

Their bittersweet review continues to describe Sorkin‘s new drama as “both entertaining and irritating. The info is important and good, but the quipping banter with which it’s delivered, isn’t.”

USA Today also takes a swipe at the show, by saying:

“It’s wonderful to have a series that discusses current affairs and the way they’re covered, even if Newsroom can be a bit self-righteous about it, and Sorkin does have a gift for amusing chatter, even if he does overindulge it. Talkiness is not Newsroom’s only flaw. The secondary characters need to be better developed and MACKenzie, who morphs from a strong woman tonight into a ditzy klutz, needs to get back to strength.”

If you thought their comments were less than complimentary, The Huffington Post provides a less-than-flattering review, by saying it’s “a dramatically inert, infuriating mess, one that wastes a fine cast to no demonstrable purpose”.

But enough with the miserable reviews, what did you, the average VIEWER think of ‘The Newsroom‘?

I thought the show was brilliant simply because it stirs this mix of emotions seen in the reviews you highlighted. The Newsroom allows the audience to reflect on ourselves and the society we live in, which some may not like what they see! I was just having a discussion about the show with a few Dish coworkers, and we all agree that The Newsroom brings up some very good points about how we get our news. It’s scary to think that most news networks are only concerned with ratings and profits! The Newsroom is unlike anything on TV right now, and that’s why HBO is the perfect home for it. HBO has the amazing ability to produce unique and very entertaining original series, like Girls, The Wire, and Boardwalk Empire, to name a few. In fact, I had to upgrade my DVR to the Hopper because it has tons of recording space to accommodate my little HBO addiction. The Newsroom is just another example of how great TV is capable of being! I’m excited to see how the rest of the season plays out.

Point well made, Chelsea! I think I’ll wait til the rest of the season airs before making my mind up. But I liked the show.
