Lynch Fears Gay Stars Lose Out On Leading Roles!

GLEE star Jane Lynch fears openly gay stars will almost always be overlooked for lead roles in Hollywood – because audiences struggle to accept homosexuals playing “straight” characters onscreen!

The lesbian actress, who married her long term partner Dr. Lara Embry last year, insists she has never suffered discrimination as she competes for roles, but she’s adamant studio executives will always prefer to cast heterosexual stars for ‘straight’ romantic parts. True?

She tells AfterElton.com:

“I don’t know when or if that will ever happen (casting openly gay stars in lead romantic roles). I think because since most of the world is straight… We want the audience to project their hopes and dreams for love and romance onto those actors. And if it’s not in some way possible, maybe never probably, in their (the audience’s) mind that it could never happen, then they’re (studio bosses) not going to do it….

“There has got to be some truth to it, in terms of, ‘I could see myself with that person.’ Because the leading man and lady are the person we want them (the audience) to fall in love with, and most of the audience is straight. So for right now, we can only use straight actors.”

When Lynch was asked whether she feels her career has suffered because of her sexuality, she adds:

“I’ve never (suffered discrimination) as far as I know, it’s been behind my back if it has. I’ve never been turned down for a role because I’m gay… I don’t find Hollywood, in my own experience, to be homophobic… But I do think the straight folks will continue to play the straight roles.”

I find it interesting when casting directors tend to get straight actors to play gay characters. Why is that? Do they find that gay actors aren’t stereotypically gay enough?
