A New Series Of TALES FROM THE CRYPT In The Works?

The popular horror anthology, ‘Tales From The Crypt‘, looks set to make a return to TV screens – fifteen years after it ended its seven-year-run on HBO!

According to Deadline, this new version will be based on the controversial 1950s EC Comics anthology, with HBO Crypt‘ producer Gil Adler returning for the show’s revival, and Andrew Cosbyy, co-creator of Syfy‘s Eureka and co-founder of comic book publisher BOOM! Studios.

The new hour-long series will not be related to the HBO version, as Cosby explains:

“It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context.

“It’s all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences.”

Cosby and Adler have circled this project for a while now, and they approached Joel Eisenberg, whose company with Timothy OwensEMO Films had partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. (rightsholder of all EC-related properties, which is run by he late Crypt creator Gaines‘ daughter Cathy Gaines Mifsud) to exploit those properties.

The TV series project is now moving forward with William M. Gaines Agent and EMO on board, having ironed out all the legal creases to make sure that all rights have been properly secured. Producers are Adler, Cosby and Steven Sawalich (via Articulus Entertainment). Eisenberg will exec produce, with William Gaines‘ grandson Corey Mifsud being credited as associate producer.

The spec is due to be pitched out to broadcast networks as part of the current development cycle, as well as to cable outlets – with some saying that Cinemax might be interested taking the show. However, producers are considering both a traditional network model and non-traditional route for the project, including fully financing the series, probably as an international co-production, before taking it to U.S. channels.
