LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY – R.I.P.!

Disco /soul singer Loleatta Holloway died on Monday night (22nd March 2011) after a brief illness – according to SpinningSoul.com. She was 64!

Notching around 18 hits on the dance charts (mostly in the late 1970s), Holloway was perhaps best known for her 1980 single Love Sensation, which has been sampled frequently on later dance and hip-hop recordings.

Born in Chicago in 1946, Holloway was first signed to the Aware label in the early ’70s, and released two albums before the label went out of business. This turned out to be a blessing, as she subsequently signed contract with Salsoul Records, and Holloway gained her first pop chart appearance with the disco track Dreaming. 1977’s Hit and Run hit No. 3 on the dance charts, and ballad Only You reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts in 1978.

Her vocals from Love Sensation featured in Black Box‘s hit Ride on Time in 1989, which originally uncredited lead to a lawsuit later settled out of court. Holloway later received the respect due when Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch sampled the same song for 1991’s Good Vibrations, receiving full royalties and performing the song with the group. The single was her first and only No. 1 hit.

Holloway‘s re-recording of the song was a European club hit in 2006!
