BEARCITY2: THE PROPOSAL – When Marriage Is Much More Than Saying I DO!
‘BearCity‘ is a hirsute ‘Sex and the City‘, following the funny, romantic, and occasionally dramatic adventures of a group of bears and cubs in New York City. The sequel, ‘BearCity 2‘ follows our familiar characters and a few new ones as they head to Provincetown, MA for Bear Week. Welcome back Tyler, Roger, Simon, Fred, Brent, Michael and Carlos and introducing some new characters.
Tyler (Joe Conti) has moved in with Roger. Roger (Gerald McCullouch) asks Tyler to marry him. Tyler is 23 and Roger is his first love, so he seeks out his friend Simon (Alex Di Dio) for advice. Finally saying yes to the proposal, the gang go to Provincetown for Bear Week.
Carlos is opening a new bar in New York and Michael his partner is having success with Broadway.com – a job he got at the end of the first movie.
As the gang arrive in Provincetown, and their home for the festival, we are introduced to Brent’s (Stephen Guarino) Mum Rose (Kathy Najimy), who owns a guest house, with Boston Bears staying there. The gang head down into the town.
Whilst standing talking to Randy the bar tender, the scene shifts to a hot muscle bear called Nate (Aaron Tone) and he walks towards them and begins to speak to Roger. Nate and Roger were once boyfriends, and he tells Nate that he is marrying Tyler and the two are introduced. Does Roger still have feelings for Nate?
Tyler goes to the bar to get some drinks and bumps into Big Dan on the way. They exchange a few words before Tyler receives a text from his Mum to say that his father and she have arrived in Provincetown. Richard Riehle stars as Tyler‘s father, and he soon learns a whole new meaning to the word “Daddy”!
Brent and Fred are filming a documentary about bears and get taken on a trip whale-watching, which turns out to be something they were not expecting. Carlos and Michael are constantly on their mobile phones and spending less time together, which means tensions between the two are frayed.
Tyler meets Big Dan again down by the sun loungers and every five minutes the lovely Varla Jean Merman hits her gong, and tells them to change from lying on their belly’s to lying on their backs. They have a conversation around the divide between the big bears and the muscle bears and life, until Roger comes back from his muscle bear friends and interrupts.
Two different groups are paired together for the bachelor parties. Roger takes Michael and Brent out with Nate for a drive in the dunes. Nate organises a beach party with some other muscle bears for Roger. Tyler has Carlos, Simon and Fred in his group and they head to a massage parlour. As you can imagine there are a few fun moments.
Michael gets jealous when using an app to see that Carlos has checked in, and there are now thousand of other men, who he feels are hotter than him, checking in as well. He wants to go home rather than spend time on the beach at Roger‘s bachelor party however Brent persuades him otherwise.
The two parties come together for the foam party later on and this is where things start to fall apart.
This film is full of fun and laughter and some serious moments. There is a decent moment around the dinner table with the gang and Tyler parents and Brent’s mum. Other scenes that are memorable are the foam party and the scene by the dick dock with Roger, Tyler and Tyler’s Father.
So what happens in the end? Is there a wedding? Will Tyler want to settle down with Roger? Does Roger want Nate back? Will Michael and Carlos still be together? You will need to watch it to find out!
Again this film shows the bear scene in all its glory from the chubby bear types to the chasers, and muscle bears. It shows the divide between the muscle bears and the chubby bears during bear week. The film was made due to donations from the LGBT community, and some of these people could then have roles in the film – either in a cameo or speaking part. I do hope they consider making a third outing. This went straight to DVD and had various screenings around the globe at film festivals and has picked up a multitude of awards.
As independent films and Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered films go, I really liked this one and would give it 5 stars out of 5.
‘BearCity 2: The Proposal‘, is a romp full of fur, fun and family as the bears realise that marriage is much more than just the freedom to say “I do.” There are no edits or censorship with this film – you will see it all and hear it all. I mean really! It’s fun to watch.
