The ARCTIC MONKEYS Lead 2012 NME AWARDS Nominations!

NME AWARDS 2012 - The Nominees

The nominations for the prestigious 2012 NME Awards are in, and the ARCTIC MONKEYS have emerged top of the list!

The prize-giving event is due to take place at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday 29 February, 2012. The performers on the night will include Kasabian, The Vaccines and Florence Welch + The Machine will be gearing up for a very special collaboration with The Horrors! British comedy’s hottest new star, Jack Whitehall, is confirmed to host the awards, and tickets for the iconic ceremony will go on sale at 9am on Friday (3rd February, 2012) at www.nme.com.

An whopping eight million votes have been cast this year for the 26 award categories, proving that the NME Awards 2012 is a ceremony that music fans nationwide are truly passionate about. The ARCTIC MONKEYS are up for an unprecedented seven awards including Best British Band, Best Album and Best Track (for The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala).

Speaking about the latest nominations news, ARCTIC MONKEYSMatt Helders said:

“We’re up for all the big ones – we’re very happy. We had a lot of fun making ‘Suck It And See’ and it’s great to be up for Best Live Band. That’s all we do – record or play live – so it’s good to be recognised!”

Joining them in the categories are Kasabian, who are up for three awards including Best British Band and Best Live Act, and The Horrors up for Best British Band and Best Album. Despite not having an album out since 2009, MUSE are nominated for Best British Band and Best Live Band, whilst The Vaccines mark their incredible year with nominations for Best New Band and Best Album. Florence + The Machine is up for Best Solo Artist, Best Track (for Shake It Out) and Florence is up for hottest female.

Florence Welch said:

“I’d be so excited to win an NME Award – I’ve never won one! I’ve only been once to the NME Awards ceremony and it’s the drunkest I’ve ever been at an awards ceremony. I’m very surprised you’re having me back. Glasvegas gave me some Buckfast and that was that.”

Justin Young, from The Vaccines said:

“It’s awesome to be nominated. We’ve had an amazing year and it just seemed to get better and better. We were in this position this time last year where everything for us seemed to hinge on a set of predictions, so to come out with a record that’s really connected with people and to be able to tour all over the world has been completely amazing.”

News released earlier this month revealed that Noel Gallagher has been named as the recipient of the NME Awards 2012 Godlike Genius Award, and he’s up for four other prizes on the night including Best Solo Artist and Best Album for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Facing the wrath on the of the NME readership are Coalition government duo David Cameron and Nick Clegg who have been nominated for Villain Of The Year – along with Liam Gallagher, Justin Bieber and (shock horror!) Lady Gaga. Battling for the Hero Of The Year award will be Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Noel Fielding and Noel Gallagher.
