DESPICABLE ME 2 - Movie Review - TOMORROW'S NEWS - The Latest Entertainment News Today!

With the talented voices of:

Steve Carell – Gru
Miranda Cosgrove – Margo
Kirsten Wiig – Lucy Wilde
Russell Brand – Dr Nefario
Elsie Kate Fisher – Agnes
Dana Galer – Edith

How could they make the first better? Feature the minions more was my idea and they certainly did in this sequel!

So the fresh animation that adorned our screens a mere two years ago is now amongst the classics. Here we go for a second helping of Gru and the loveable yellow minions.

At the end of the first movie Gru after saving this three adopted kids Margo, Edith, and Agnes from Vector had turned his back on being an evil villain. His new calm life of tucking the girls in and reading them bedtime stories, and making Jam’s and Jellies with the Minions. Dr Nefario is set to take an unexpected turn when he is recruited by Lucy Wilde and Silas Ramsbottom, and is taken to the headquarters of the Anti-Villain League, a society dedicated to fighting crime on a global scale.

It is here that he discovers that El Macho an old villain is back and on the loose and he must stop him. Because Gru was once a villain himself and knows how they think, Silas (the League’s head), wants Gru to help them fight the villain. With the help of Gru’s assistant, Dr. Nefario, his minions, Margo, Edith, and Agnes must save the world (“again”).

DESPICABLE ME 2 - Review - TOMORROW'S NEWS - The Latest Entertainment News Today!

Despicable Me 2 doesn’t follow the same format as the first, which is great for sequels as they should really stand out on their own. It delivers the right balance of laughs and sentimentality. Grumpy Gru gets to prove he is a hero again as he saves the world from evil. Dr Nefario takes a back seat this time around with Gru‘s Minions stepping up to the plate and being showcased a lot more. They were the lovable characters from the first movie and you did want them to move up and have more of a presence, and this is certainly what happens in this one.

The supremely adorable Agnes steals some of the limelight and as the film opens, Gru dresses up as a fairy princess to keep Edith happy at her birthday party.

Gru (voiced superbly by Steve Carell) teams up with Secret agent Lucy Wilde (sweetly voiced by Kristen Wiig). The twosome pose as shop owners in a shopping mall where the AVL think a stolen secret serum, that can cause monstrous mutations, may be located. As they team up to investigate Gru reveals his inner romantic side and starts to fall for Lucy. The scene with Dr Nefario leaving is funny and stolen by one of the yellow skinned minions. The Minions, who keep strangely disappearing, are kidnapped by the evil mastermind who is planning to unleash the deadly serum on humanity.

The film moves along at a great pace and provides plenty of funny moments. We have Gru with his dry wit as usual, Agnes who is just adorable and then the minions who are really the show stealers. Some of Carell’s comedic timing, which is perfect throughout, gets stolen by a minions moment.

DESPICABLE ME 2 - Review - TOMORROW'S NEWS - The Latest Entertainment News Today!

Throughout Despicable Me 2 it is the minions that always deliver the biggest laughs, the FIRE scene is hilarious and their cover versions of “I swear” and ‘YMCA’ will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter.

So all in all we have a villain who discovers his inner warmth again as he is forced to show the same love he had for the three girls in the first towards his new crush Lucy.  Will Gru save the day and everything be peachy and rosy? You will have to go along and see for yourself.

As the credits role, sit in your seats the Minions are auditioning for their spin off movie due out late 2014 about their life before they met evil Villain Gru.

I wasn’t sure they could make a sequel that would rival it’s predecessor and I was wrong. I am glad we got to see more of the minions as they were my favourites from the first movie.

5 stars out of 5 from me. In my view, it holds the title of Best Animated film of 2013, so far. Disney are really going to have to pull something out of the bag with ‘Monsters University‘ if they want to steal that top spot from Illumination Entertainment. We did get a sneak peak at 5 minutes from MU and it does look good, so let’s wait and see what the summer promises.

So this is set to hit the UK Screen this 28th June and the USA July 3.  If you didn’t get along to this preview weekend, then please go see this movie. I felt like I had done a session of Laughter Yoga when I came out.
